1. Everyone has a role in keeping the workplace safe.

2. Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) has expanded.

  • We used to think about workplace health and safety in terms of injury prevention on the job: hard hats, safety boots, correct operation of machines, proper handling of chemicals (WHMIS)
  • Now employers are required to include harassment and violence in their OHSA policies and procedures.

3. New training approaches are required.

  • The Bill 168 policy is posted and the training has been done. Now what?
  • Previous OHSA training initiatives were specific and clearly outlined: when you do (blank), you must protect yourself and your coworkers by (blank). The focus was on the policy because it told workers what to do.
  • Responding to harassment and intimate partner violence requires a different approach and a new set of skills (empathy, listening, taking direction from vs giving advice)

4. Making the difficult conversations a little bit easier.

  • SACHA offers over 30 years of expertise working with survivors of harassment and violence.
  • SACHA offers 19 years of training expertise using principles of adult education.
  • SACHA will develop a training package that is flexible and geared to meet individual workplace needs.
